Thai traditional herbal products are instantly recognisable: small jars of balm, roll-on oils, pocket inhalers and cloth herbal compress balls. They are bought by travellers, stocked by Asian grocery stores and herbal shops abroad, and used in spas and massage studios. For importers they combine a strong cultural story with compact, easy-to-ship packaging.
Main product types
- Herbal balms — ointments in green, yellow or white formulas, often based on ingredients such as camphor, menthol, eucalyptus or plai.
- Massage and aromatic oils — liquid oils and roll-ons, including "hot" formulas used in traditional massage. Browse essential and herbal oils.
- Pocket inhalers (ya dom) — small aromatic sticks sold singly or in packs.
- Herbal compress balls (luk pra kob) — cloth bundles of dried herbs used in spa treatments.
- Gift sets — mixed boxes of balms, oils and inhalers for retail and souvenir channels.
Read the label, not the name
Many long-established Thai brands use animal or traditional names on the pack. The name does not always describe what is inside, so always ask for the full ingredient list for each product you plan to import.
How these products are classified abroad
Depending on ingredients and on what the label says, a balm or oil can be treated as a cosmetic, a traditional or herbal medicine, or general merchandise — and the rules differ from country to country. Some markets restrict certain ingredients or wording. Confirm the classification and any registration needed with your regulator or customs broker before ordering. Our overview of Thai export certifications explains the documents suppliers commonly hold.
Labels and packing
- Some products carry Thai-language labels only — plan for importer stickers where your market requires them.
- Ask for pack configurations: single units, packs of 6 or 12, display boxes and carton sizes.
- For gift and souvenir channels, ask whether presentation boxes are available.
Shipping notes
Products containing essential oils, alcohol or camphor can be subject to carrier restrictions, especially for air freight. Ask your forwarder before booking and request the supplier's safety information for liquid products. Sea freight is usually the economical option for larger volumes; air or courier suits samples and small reorders.
Building an assortment
A typical starter range mixes a few balm formulas, two or three oils, inhalers and one gift set — enough to test which formats your customers prefer. Ask the supplier which items are packed together in a carton so the order ships efficiently.
