How to Import Rice from Thailand: A Step-by-Step Guide for Distributors and Importers

How to Import Rice from Thailand: A Step-by-Step Guide for Distributors and Importers

Thailand is one of the world's leading rice exporters, and Thai rice — especially Hom Mali (jasmine) rice — is a staple on supermarket shelves from the Middle East to North America. If you are a distributor, wholesaler or retail chain planning to import rice from Thailand, this guide walks through the decisions you will make, in the order you will make them.

1. Decide which Thai rice you need

  • Thai Hom Mali (jasmine) rice — fragrant, soft, long grain. Sold as 100% Hom Mali or in blends; premium retail and food-service markets.
  • Thai white rice (long grain) — 5%, 10%, 15%, 25% broken grades; the workhorse for bulk and price-sensitive markets.
  • Parboiled rice — popular in West Africa, the Middle East and South Asia; firmer grain, holds up in bulk cooking.
  • Glutinous (sticky) rice — for Asian food-service and specialty retail.
  • Brown, riceberry and organic rice — health and premium segments; ask for organic certification if you market it as organic.

Grade matters more than brand for most B2B buyers: "5% broken" means no more than 5% of kernels are broken, which drives both price and cooking quality.

2. Choose retail packs or bulk

Thai mills and exporters typically offer private-label retail packs (1, 2, 5, 10, 25 kg bags with your brand) and bulk (25 or 50 kg PP bags, or big bags). Decide early: private label needs artwork approval and packaging lead time; bulk is faster but shifts packing to your side.

3. Confirm certifications for your destination

Common asks are GMP and HACCP for the mill, Halal for Muslim markets, Organic (EU/USDA/IFOAM) for organic lines, and for Hom Mali a Thai Hom Mali Rice certificate / DNA test from a recognised lab. Your importer of record must also meet the destination's food-import rules (for example FDA prior notice in the US). See our guide to Thai export certifications.

4. Understand container quantities

Rice is usually shipped by the 20-foot container. The exact tonnage per container depends on bag size, pallets vs. floor-loaded and destination weight limits — ask the supplier to quote per container, not only per tonne, and confirm whether the price is FOB Bangkok/Laem Chabang or CIF your port (see FOB vs CIF when buying from Thailand).

5. Ask for the right documents

A standard Thai rice shipment comes with a commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin (Form D/E/AANZ etc. where a free-trade agreement applies), phytosanitary certificate, fumigation certificate and, where required, a health/food-safety certificate and Halal certificate. Tell the exporter your destination early so they can prepare the correct set.

6. Sample, then negotiate

Request a physical sample of the exact grade and crop year. Check aroma, broken percentage, moisture and foreign matter. Only then discuss price, payment terms (T/T deposit + balance against documents, or L/C) and delivery schedule.
